Can you really use tea tree oil as a lice treatment?

Yes!

A wonderful use for tea tree oil is as a lice treatment! Who hasn't had to deal with lice before? My son isn't in school or day care, but as a scout leader, I've had to issue a couple of letters to parents to advise them that one of the scouts has had lice and that they should treat their kids hair as well. That means me too! So what do we do? We all head to the pharmacy and grab a treatment and start the lengthy process of getting rid of these bugs.

So we apply chemical treatments with pediculicides in our hair. Some treatments even contain Lindane, which is a neurotoxin!

personally that scares me. A lot. A safer method would be to use tea tree oil as a lice treatment to get rid of them.

Rub pure TTO directly onto your scalp and comb your hair to distribute the TTO everywhere. Wrap your head in a warm damp towel and let it rest 10 minutes. Wash your hair with TTO shampoo or add about 2 to 5 drops to your regular shampoo at every use.

Continue this treatment for at least 10 days to make sure that the eggs are all dead.

You will have to clean everything; linen, clothes, brushes etc. you can disinfect these items by washing them and then disinfecting them with TTO mixed into water.

About 20 drops for the equivalent of a bath full of water. Let everything soak for a day and stir it around a bit.

You could also get a detergent that has TTO as a main ingredient, which works extremely well also. A good way to prevent initial infestation is to use TTO shampoo on a regular basis. That should prevent any further infestations in your hair. In this case, I prefer prevention and I’m quite happy all of my detergents and personal care products contain Melaleuca oil.
